What advice would I give my younger self about starting a business?
As a founder I’ve discovered a fair few things since starting my business ownership life. I’ve so enjoyed the whole process but it’s certainly been a learning curve. When you start out in business there is so much advice on offer it can seem overwhelming. It’s often difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff and discover what is relevant to you and your start-up business. Sometimes in life the unexpected can happen. You know the feeling; everything is ticking along nicely and then suddenly from out of the blue things go horribly wrong. What is Making Tax Digital and what does it mean for Company Directors and Small Business Owners?
Last month’s blog focused on the legal responsibilities of company directors and how they can mitigate the risk of getting things wrong and falling foul of the law. The level of potential criminal and civil risk for company directors has increased over recent years, with tougher regulation introduced covering a range of areas. Company directors are also subject to a number of statutory requirements including a duty to keep proper books and records and therefore must closely monitor the everyday operations of their business. Tax evasion is a key area, with HMRC crucially having the power to investigate and prosecute. With Making Tax Digital coming into force this month, one of the biggest shakeups of the UK taxation system for years, company directors need to ensure that their business is fully compliant.
Criminalisation of the Boardroom… I am too small a fish for it to happen to me…Right or Wrong?
Earlier last month, I attended a legal update organised by the Institute for Turnaround and kindly hosted by Macfarlanes, a London-based law firm. The subject aptly titled “The Criminalisation of the Boardroom – is this a real threat to directors, or mere puff from the regulators?” was analysed by Neill Blundell (https://blog.macfarlanes.com/u/102f23y/neill-blundell), Head of Corporate Crime and Investigations at the practice.
